Masala Chai

For many tea lovers, chai is a go-to beverage known for its rich, spiced aroma and comforting warmth. However, traditional chai is typically made with black tea, which contains caffeine.

Masala Chai, often referred to simply as chai, is a beloved spiced tea originating from India. Known for its aromatic blend of spices and robust flavor, Masala Chai has become a staple in households and cafes worldwide.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup milk (optional)
  • 2 tsp loose black tea or 2 tea bags
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 2-3 green cardamom pods, crushed
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 2-3 cloves
  • 1-2 black peppercorns
  • Sugar or honey to taste

Preparation

  1. In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
  2. Add the grated ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and black peppercorns. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the tea leaves and boil for another 2 minutes.
  4. Add milk (if using) and sweeten to taste.
  5. Strain into cups and serve hot.
