Chai – A Simple Drink with a Rich Tradition

For many tea lovers, chai is a go-to beverage known for its rich, spiced aroma and comforting warmth. However, traditional chai is typically made with black tea, which contains caffeine.

Chai, in its simplest form, means “tea.” But when people outside of South Asia use the word, they are usually referring to a specific kind of spiced tea, often called “masala chai.” This drink, made by brewing black tea with spices, milk, and sweetener, has been a part of daily life in India and surrounding regions for generations. It is served in homes, at roadside stalls, and in cafés, each cup slightly different depending on personal taste and regional tradition.

Ingredients and Preparation

The foundation of chai is black tea, usually Assam or Darjeeling, brewed with a combination of spices. Common ingredients include:

  • Cardamom, for a light floral note
  • Ginger, adding warmth and a slight spiciness
  • Cinnamon, contributing sweetness
  • Cloves and black pepper, enhancing depth and heat

The tea is simmered with water and spices before milk and sweetener—typically sugar or honey—are added. Some prefer a stronger tea with more spice, while others enjoy a milder version with extra milk.

Chai in Everyday Life

In India, chai is more than just a drink—it is a part of daily routines. “Chai wallahs” (tea vendors) can be found in nearly every town and city, serving small, strong cups of tea to commuters, shopkeepers, and anyone needing a short break. It is common to pause for a cup of chai during conversations, business meetings, or visits with friends.

Chai Beyond South Asia

Although chai originated in South Asia, it has become popular worldwide. Many cafés now serve “chai lattes,” a Western adaptation with frothy milk, often much sweeter than traditional chai. Packaged chai blends and ready-made concentrates make it easy to prepare at home, though many still prefer the ritual of brewing it fresh.

No matter how it is made, chai remains a simple, comforting drink with a deep connection to the people and cultures that enjoy it.
